What to Expect at the Keno Lounge
The game of keno is quite different from other gambling games you'll find in a casino since players usually take part in the action in its own lounge. The concept of the keno lounge was invented as a great way to get around certain laws way back in the 60's.
Back then, lotteries were illegal in the United States, which rules out keno since the game can be classified as a form of a lottery. So, as a way to get around that law, the concept of a keno lounge was made. In a way, it was a gambling innovation that would last to the present day. The idea was to have a make-believe horse race going on and then play the game accordingly. That way the game of keno, technically, wasn't going against any standing laws.
Of course if it is a keno lounge it should be a secluded room or area in a casino outfitted with its own seating. When you enter a keno lounge in a live casino you'll immediately notice seats and/or couches all over the place. The keno lounge would usually be separated from the rest of the casino by a partition made of glass (thus giving other players a chance to see what's going on inside and be enticed to play as well).
The keno lounge will also have its own way of generating the winning numbers to be displayed on the screens. The process of selecting the winning numbers will be different from casino to casino, but you would usually find either a computerized system for selecting random numbers or winning numbers being dropped from a drum.
Another distinct thing about the keno lounge is the big board with the numbers lighting up. Other keno lounges will instead have a video screen in place, still, others will have more than one video screen and would even have video screens all over the casino where players can easily spot them and figure out if they won something.
The reason for the large number of video monitors is to cater to players who would want to multi-task and make bets in keno while playing other games without bothering to walk into the keno lounge. Casinos also employ runners to cater to these players. Runners often move around among players, going in and out of the keno lounge, taking bets, and paying out the winners. This way, a casino can have more people play the game without packing a huge crowd in the keno lounge.
These are the things you can expect when you enter a keno lounge. If you don't want to get away from your favorite table game, then you can still make keno bets without actually getting up off your seat.
